Our Country

Marlkawo Homeland

Marlkawo is a 12 hour drive from Darwin via Maningrida or a short 45 minute flight from Jabiru in Kakadu National Park. Our Country is part of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area - declared in 2009 as a significant part of Australia's National Reserve System. Covering an area 1,394,951 hectares, our homeland is nestled in our Ancestor Country and features spectacular stone and gorge Country, floodplains, rivers, billabongs, extensive rock art shelters and galleries, waterfalls and freshwater rock pools.

Our Fathers and Grandfathers built this community and the airstrip with their bare hands so their wurdurd/children and grandchildren could always live on their kunred/Country. Today, our family lives here at Marlkawo. We call ourselves Bininj (people) and we speak Kunwinjku language.

Malbak Aboriginal Corporation

To look after our kunred/Country and our homeland, our family started the Malbak Aboriginal Corporation in 2022. This is a not-for-profit organisation we have made to support our family returning to their Country, provide living spaces and work opportunities for them that keep Country, culture and family strong and healthy. Malbak means ‘core’, the important rock we use to flake and chip off sharp tips for knives and spear heads. The Malbak rock core is like the parent, the children flake off the parent and keep culture and Country strong.
